Formal Courses
The Microscopy and Imaging Center offers formal courses in SEM, TEM, light microscopy as well as a sample preparation for both biological and material sciences. These courses are offered through the Department of Biology.
Please note that preregistration questionnaires are only honored when received during the official preregistration periods as laid out in the academic calendar. http://admissions.tamu.edu/Registrar/General/Calendar.aspx
How to Pre-Register For
Courses in SEM and TEM
1. Look into the academic calendar (http://admissions.tamu.edu/Registrar/General/Calendar.aspx)
2. Find the official preregistration period and note that:
-
The spring semester preregistration period is for the summer (BIOL 603) and fall (BIOL 602) classes
-
The fall semester preregistration period is for the spring class (BIOL 604).
3. Below there are links to different preregistration questionnaires. Fill out the one that relates to the course of interest and send it to Dr. Holzenburg (holzen@mic.tamu.edu) during the preregisteration period in order to be preregistered.
4. Once the preregistration period has ended, a list of qualifying preregistrants will be generated on a first come-first serve basis until all seats are taken. Additional students will be put on a waiting list. Students on the waiting list may be able to move up that list, if other preregistered students drop the class, have a block on their account or other situations. The final roster for each of the classes may only be determined during the first week of class.
5. Also note:
- Students registered for BIOL 603 during the summer are not automatically registered for BIOL 602 in the fall.
- BIOL 603 runs as a two-cohort course during summer I and II. One cohort (Tue and Thu) is concerned with advanced TEM in the Materials and Engineering arena while the other cohort (Mon and Wed) consists of students needing to learn more involved specimen preparation techniques such as embedding, ulrathin sectioning, immunolabelling, cryo EM etc. If the latter case applies to you, you can take BIOL 603 before BIOL 602 as you are likely to spend more time on specimen preparation than on the electron microscope before you get your first data.
- BIOL 608 currently does not require preregistration.
BIOL 602 - TEM I: Fundamentals of Transmission Electron Microscopy
BIOL 602 - Preregistration Questionnaire
BIOL 603 - Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy
BIOL 603 - Preregistration Questionnaire
BIOL 604 - Fundamental Scanning Electron Microscopy/ESEM
BIOL 604 - Preregistration Questionnaire
BIOL 608 - Theory and Applications of Light Microscopy
