This sample is an artificially created blood vessel inside organ-on-chip co-cultured with tumors that is fixed and stained for vascular cell adhesion junctions and key barrier regulatory proteins. Degradation of adhesion junction protein VE-Cadherin (green) is observed in the vessel due to cancer inflammation with a distinct up-regulation of Src kinase (yellow). This vascular dysfunction further provides routes to the blood platelets for extravasation into the tumors that promotes metastasis.
